On any beach these days there is usually rubbish to be found, some left by thoughtless visitors and some washed ashore from boats. If children are suitably equipped with gloves then a rubbish search could be organised. This can turn up a variety of interesting objects, particularly cans. Some will still look fairly new, while others will be rusted and barely identifiable. Some may be battered and split, ‘peeled’ open like an apple skin or flattened vertically. There may be charred wood, debris from fishing boats, lolly sticks, plastic containers and so on.

After examination, put some of the most interesting rubbish finds into a plastic sack and, keeping gloves on, ask children to reach in and pull out a piece of litter. Now ask them to explain how it came to be on the shore. There will be fairly convincing reasons for much of the material – a plastic spoon left by a picnicking family, a plastic bottle dropped overboard by someone on a passing ship, a can thrown down by a disappointed football supporter.

Next ask the children to make up fantastic stories about their items of rubbish – the crushed can was sat on by a giant or crushed in the jaws of a sea monster, a piece of wood was charred by a dragon’s breath, an old comb was once the property of a mermaid, and so on. These can be extended into stories. Alternatively let children draw their objects and then mount the pictures on card alongside their two written explanations – one plausible, one fantastic.

Talk about ‘beachcombers’ – who they are and what they do. Read the poem by George Mackay Brown.
